Lupita Nyong’o. Viola Davis. Michelle Obama; these are just some of the long list of women who have been inspiring us lately with their strength, intelligence and beauty. Another name to add to the list is Simone Biles, the young American gymnast who triumphed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, she literally had everyone at the Losode office gushing over her. After winning big in Rio, 19-year-old Biles has now officially become America’s most decorated gymnast and her style on the floor is to die for!
Biles was born in 1997 and, though you would not know it to look at her today, had a tough start in life. With her parents unable to care for her or her siblings, Biles moved in and out of foster homes, eventually being adopted by her grandparents. It was after trying gymnastics during a field trip at the age of six that people started to realise there was something special about Biles. Two years later she began training, and by 2011 she was competing.
Contributing to the USA’s 46 gold medals were swimmers Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, as well as our favourite Simone. In the end, Biles won four golds: one for the women’s vault, one for the women’s team all-round, one for the women’s floor exercise, and one for the women’s individual all-round. She also won a bronze medal in the women’s beam, narrowly missing out on a better score after stumbling.
